Meet the Hewsons + Introducing the Legacy Project!
I haven’t shared anything in a really long time, and that’s because I’ve been super busy shooting some amazing families! And also because I would rather do just about anything than sit down and blog. So you know what I’m about to share is going to be GOOD if I’m actually putting on my writing hat.
What have I been working on, you ask? After a lot of soul searching and reflection, I decided to focus my time and energy on projects that I love instead of shooting whatever happens to come my way. If it’s going to take me away from my kids, it has to feed my soul. So I created the Legacy Project, a passion project that was borne from a family trip to a couple old cemeteries. But that’s a post for another day.
The Legacy Project is all about storytelling, connecting with the past, and looking toward the future. It’s about the lessons and gifts we get from our parents and how those things are carried on to our children. It’s about family.
Meet the Hewsons
While Tricia and Brian aren’t technically part of the project (I photographed their family long before this idea took shape), their story is a perfect fit. The first thing you should know is that Tricia is one of my oldest and most loyal clients. I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, and I don’t, but if I did it would be her.
The second thing you need to know about Tricia and Brian is that they have been trying to become parents for a very long time. I’m not familiar with all the details of their story, but I know it involves miscarriage, cerclage, polyps, IVF, injections, and heartbreak. Lots and lots of heartbreak. Tricia has been very vocal in sharing her story, and I cried with her as she posted daily videos of her injections and shared news of yet another negative pregnancy test.
So when she contacted me last winter about doing a session with her mom, siblings, and their families, I was stoked. “I GET TO DO ANOTHER SESSION WITH TRICIA!” I thought. Then, a few weeks before the session I got a message. Could she tell me a secret? Umm, YES. She was pregnant. I burst into tears and told her that, a few days earlier, I had had a dream that she was pregnant (true story).
So now our family session wasn’t just going to be about family portraits. It was going to be about sharing the joyous news with her family and documenting their story. Amazing, right? I thought so, too.
So without further ado, meet Tricia, Brian, their amazing family, and their baby girl.
See what I mean? Powerful.
After the big reveal, it was time for the portraits. And let me just tell you: no one does portraits like the Millers.
